[mood |mmm, cliches]

Must stop writing Hikaru no Go AUs.  I've got, like, five going simultaneously.

My favorite is the one where Sai's a young pro strong-armed by his mother into babysitting wee!Hikaru.  And as far as everyone at the Institute is concerned, Sai's all dignified and intense and intimidating as hell, but then one day he drags this kid in to sign up for the pro exams, shrieking happily about how after so many years, his little Hikaru has finally chosen the path of Go!  And Hikaru's all, "I CHOSE NOTHING.  YOU KIDNAPPED ME.  AGAIN."  I don't yet know the backstory for the 'again' part, admittedly, but whatevs.  Meanwhile, Touya Kouyo is also in the lobby, wondering when his eternal rival turned into a kidnapping freak on a sugar high.

I am also bizarrely fond of the one where Heihachi decides to prove to Hikaru that Go isn't just for old men, and bribes him into going to this salon where the Meijin's teeny son is rumored to play.  Only Ogata is there as well, and Heihachi mentions he's pretty sure he has a board Shuusaku used to play on, and they all haul ass back to his shed to take a look.  And Hikaru's, like, "SO BORED.  Wait.  Why is there a bloodstain on that goban?"  And his grandpa and Ogata both deny that there's anything there, but Akira's all, "Um, no, actually he's right.  Totally a stain."  And Sai's all, "You mean I get to haunt two small children this time?  Unlife is good."

Longest one I've got is where Hikaru thinks he's the shit and that he doesn't need to join the pros 'cause he can beat most of 'em anyway.  Except then he gets his ego slapped down by Akira when they're fifteen.  And when Akira realizes this moron who almost beat him in a game is depressed because he lost to a 3-dan, he manipulates Hikaru into becoming a pro, being all, "If a lower-dan can beat you, you need a lot of work".  Leaving out the part about him being a total prodigy and, like, five seconds away from his automatic promotion to 7-dan under the new rules.  Hikaru is deeply confused when, months later, he realizes that he doesn't actually suck by pro standards.  He concludes that Akira is a lying liarface who lies, and Akira is smug.

Why yes, my summaries are the shiznit.

Oh, man, I'm a total AU WHORE. Well, okay, I'm a cliche whore, to be perfectly honest, but AUs in particular make my heart tingle pleasantly. Except I do not understand the point of HnG AUs that don't involve Go. Does not compute.

The last AU there needs so much work. SO much. But it's probably the only one I'm currently writing that I can see myself eventually posting, so you may be in luck.

me too i love cliches :DDDD I'm always talking about doing a massive fandom cliche challenge but it never happens. Hikago needs more rentboy!fic!! and ZOMBIES!

I don't really like AUs in most fandoms but there are exceptions - I *love* Prince of Tennis AUs because in that fandom the tennis usually translates to some other kind of goal, and it works really well. (Either that or everyone just writes fairy tale AUs which i also love). I'd like to see more of that kind of thing in Hikago, but I'm not sure that the characters really lend themselves to being taken out of the context of Go, because, let's face it, Go isn't just a game, it's a way of life and something that seems really character-defining. So, yeah, non-canon-AUs are a little hard to see. But I still think it'd be fantastic to try! Once for last year's Blind Go arboretum and I plotted out this awesome Aladdin AU omg, where Hikaru was Aladdin and Akira was Jasmine and it was the best thing ever *___* and I still want to write it.

ok i will stop babbling at you. Hi, by the way!

I SWORE NEVER TO ADMIT THIS. But I've got two hundred words of Hikago zombie!fic on my computer. I DON'T KNOW.

Oh god. I...I don't know what to say. Sai's the genie, right? RIGHT? Or the monkey. Ogata could totally pull of the vizier role, though I'm picturing Kuwabara as the old!prisoner!Vizier who tricks Aladdin into finding the lamp. Alternately, Kuwabara is the parrot. My friends and I have this theory that secretly, the entire Aladdin movie arc is ALL about Iago's character development.

Uh. So. I now desperately want Hikago Beauty and the Beast fic. Hikaru is this HIDEOUS yellow beast-thing with a giant furry five on his chest, and Akira's all, "I know I'm your prisoner and all, but seriously, could we eat something other than ramen for dinner? Just once?" And they play go, only Shindo's HIDEOUS YELLOW CLAWS can't hold the stones, and he gets all angsty and woebegone.

I will not even start on how much I want the fic where Hikaru and Akira wake up with superpowers.

HI.

Hahaha, I think it went:
Aladdin = Hikaru
Jasmine = ♥ Akira ♥
Sai = the Genie
Waya = Abu :D
Ogata = Jafar
Ochi = the parrot

oh my god SHINDOU'S HIDEOUS YELLOW CLAWS :( :( :( :( maybe Sai is the witch who trapped him there to teach him a lesson for disrespecting the world of Go dkjd;fk, and Waya and Isumi are Cogsworth & Lumiere, respectively! :D KO YONG HA IS TOTES GASTON & OCHI IS HIS LACKEY-DUDE, DJKFLJKDL

I am going to have nightmares of Ochi's head stuck on Iago's body. THANKS SO MUCH. ...actually, now I'm filled with a perverse desire to photoshop that into cyber-reality. Wow.

Worse is the mental image of Touya Kouyo as Akira's tiny plump inept father. Just...ow.

Waya would totally stomp the hell out of Hikaru once he reached elephanthood.

I think it's actually physically impossible for me to not capslock HIDEOUS YELLOW CLAWS. Ahaha, YES. Hikaru totally refused him a game--"Ew, Go? That's for lame old geezers. LIKE YOU." And Hikaru can't turn back into a human until he finds his Eternal Rival and reaches the Hand of God! Only Ko Yeong-ha has already claimed Akira as his rival, in between songs about eating dozens of eggs. Delicious eggs.

WAYA AND ISUMI = COGSWORTH & LUMIERE. FOR THE EMEFFING WIN.

Suyong is the teeny chipped teacup. Kurata is Mrs. Potts. Oh yes.

Sad but true: my crapass summary makes it sound better than it actually is. Woe.

On the other hand, I do enjoy having Hikaru play Kuwabara and then be all, "By the way, why does everyone call you Honinbo? Title, you say? What are these titles you speak of?"

Oh, Hikaru. I do so love his total ignorance of the pro world, and everyone else's constant facepalming. I sincerely believe Waya wears foundation to cover up the handprint now permanently marking his pretty, pretty face.

I love it that a narrative device to explain the game and the pro world to the viewers/readers is worked in so well with the main character's general personality - clueless!Hikaru and clueless!reader are educated in parallel.

Hikaru is so loveable while being completely exasperating. Waya just expresses everyone's feelings. I'm genuinely surprised he hasn't had a heart attack yet over Hikaru's constantly displayed ignorance.

YES. I am so in awe of the entire story but ESPECIALLY the narrative structure - the way we learn along with Hikaru, the tightness & intensity of the classic cyrano conflict (he thinks he's in love with ME but he's actually in love with MY GHOST who's been writing my letters for me all this time) and how successfully that conceit manages to sustain itself through the entire story; all the parallelism, the narrative expansion outward from Hikaru and Sai to Hikaru+Sai+Akira to Hikaru+Sai+Akira+Insei, on and on and on until you realize that the 'hand of god' metaphor encompasses the entire world.

And then! the characterization! <333333 GOD, Waya just goes around facepalming at the entire world. I was so surprised that in those artbook extras Obata said he thought Isumi was the furthest from the hand of god. I would think Waya is, just because Waya seems to be the only one who still has both feet planted IN REALITY. :)))))

One of the things that impressed me from the start was the way the writers not only used Hikaru's introduction to the pro world as a way to introduce the viewers, but also as a way to entice viewers into go itself. They have Shindo, the main character, rocket to the very top, which of course is going to appeal to kids watching (hey, maybe I'm a hidden go prodigy too! ...and any day now, my Hogwarts letter WILL arrive). And they're smart enough to offset that with Akari and Tsutsui, who will never be great but can still compete and have fun (okay, so I'm not a hidden prodigy, but I can kick some ass in junior high tournaments. But seriously, Hogwarts letter, still waiting).

They're not always subtle about it, but they handle it well, and just make it SO natural to Hikaru's general state of knowing NOTHING. Though I did find it kind of hard to swallow that he was totally ignorant of the internet.

Speaking of which--I will never, never not love the concept of a ghost surfing the net.

One day, I'm totally writing an entire story the way I write my summaries. IT'LL BE SO AWESOME AND UNREADABLE.

Man, I'm still waiting on some Hikago groundhog day fic. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right. Ever, ever again.

I haven't actually posted any of these--and sadly, the babysitting one is only a few pages long right now. Sorry!
